Venue description

The five-storey gallery is located in the original historical Varna [Brewhouse] building, which is part of the old Smíchov Distillery that had been kept in ruins for more than 20 years. Finally, in 2021, the Trigema group and Černý’s architectural studio, Black n’ Arch, decided to give it a new lease of life and develop the site into a residential complex with a gastronomic and cultural centre.

“Varna is a listed building, so it was impossible to tear it down. Having to keep the building, we decided to make it an art institution, and after some time, it became David Černý’s museum. Then I realized it is not a museum but more of a musoleum. The decision also resulted from not being able to make an agreement with the National Gallery, who wanted me to do a solo exhibition.”*

Together with the gallery space, Musoleum offers a café/bar designed to preserve and commemorate the industrial history of the building. The café is being run in partnership with new and exclusive products from Artic bakery. Visitors are also invited to step onto terrace and observe Prague from a perspective they’ve never seen before.
