The artist grew up in London and Cornwall, where he fell in love with rave music broadcast on pirate radio transmissions and club soundsystems: Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers and Goldie drew him into a whole new world. As he developed his own musicianship he turned to house and synth-pop melodies that shaped his own sound. Over the course of several released epics, Tourist has released remixes for many artists including Christine and the Queens, Chrvches, Deftones, Wolf Alice, Swedish House Mafia & The Weeknd, Sofia Kourtesis, Flume, and Caroline Polachek. In 2015, he received a Grammy Award as co-writer of Sam Smith's massive hit Stay With Me. To date, he has released four albums: U (2016), Wild (2019), Everyday (2019) and Inside Out (2022) - all released on Monday Records.
During the pandemic, William Philips' close friend died and his daughter was born, both events that changed his life. To express the intertwined feelings of grief and joy, he created Inside Out - a tender, uplifting album full of rocking garage grooves, chunky bass and French house melodies. When he embarked on a tour of the UK and mainland Europe, both with stand-alone shows and as support for Bonobo, he had a dazzling experience. , I love that people who come to hear me do so not for my latest album, but for what my music represents. I've realised that each of my albums is like the next chapters of a book, some are more interesting than others, but you only find that out when you've finished them all.
And the next chapter is coming soon. The new album Memory Morning is scheduled for the first half of 2024. It was created using the same set of home studio tools the artist used during Pandemic: an OP1 synthesiser, a laptop and a smartphone. The release moves away from biographical themes in favour of a mood-based style of songwriting and composition set, of course, in electronic music. He was particularly influenced by the quirkiness of psychedelic and shoegaze music, through his love of the bands Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins and Beach House, as well as the collage-like constructions of his idols The Avalanches or the award-winning film Aftersun. The album was created in stream-of-consciousness mode, focusing on creating musical settings and delivering the intensity of the experience of experiencing the recordings in intimate, private settings.
