The Documentation Center of the Berlin Wall Memorial houses the permanent exhibition 1961 | 1989. The Berlin Wall. On 420 square meters, the exhibition is dedicated to the history of the division of Berlin. It explains the political and historical background from the construction of the Wall to the fall of the Wall and reunification. How did the Wall come to be built in 1961? How did people in divided Berlin live with the Wall? Why did it fall in 1989?

The exhibition features numerous objects, biographies and audiovisual media. The "Archive of Memories" lets contemporary witnesses talk about their experiences and adventures in the shadow of the Wall. The exhibition combines the history of political events and everyday life and shows the consequences that the brutal division of the city had for the people.
