Alam / Firas Khoury / France, Tunisia, Palestine, Qatar, UAE 2022 / 104 min. - Firas Khoury's captivating debut. Five high school classmates, Israeli Palestinians, consider the risks inherent in remembering a differently interpreted shared history.
Israel's annual Independence Day coincides with the commemoration of Al-Nakba, the day Palestinians honor as the day of their expulsion and displacement in 1948. It is on this day that tensions between classmates and their neighborhoods are heightened. The teenagers are part of a generation of Arab children whose families have sought greater civil rights. When the determined and beautiful Maysaa' (Sereen Khass) arrives in Tamer's class, some decisions become a little clearer for the quiet 17-year-old. This coming-of-age drama is also a reflection on the social pressures and contradictions that arise from the suppression of parts of local history.
