The Bratislava City Gallery was established in 1961 as an independent cultural organisation under the founding authority of the capital of the Slovak Republic.
The basic mission of the gallery is to purposefully and systematically collect, professionally process, protect, document and make available to the public collection items in the field of fine arts in the form of exhibitions, permanent exhibitions, scientific research, educational and publishing activities. The Bratislava City Gallery is systematically building a collection as part of the cultural heritage of the city of Bratislava. Currently, it manages more than 35,000 collection items that document the development of fine arts in Slovakia from the Gothic period to the present. Part of the GMB collection consists of works of ancient Central European art.
The Bratislava City Gallery also plays a role in the field of protection and care of real estate cultural heritage. The buildings of Mirbach and Pálffy Palace, in which the gallery is located, have the status of a national cultural monument. The gallery's premises are increasingly opening to create an accessible, friendly, and inspiring environment open to the public, including local artists, local communities, and fellow citizens with special needs.
The Bratislava City Gallery programmatically enters the city's public space through other activities aimed at saving, managing and realising works of art located in the exterior of individual city districts of Bratislava. At the same time, it offers an educational program focused on the topic of public space, its values and roles in the lives of urban society.
