The artist's new album is the result of a search for more space and looseness and a trust in his own intuition. It was recorded in California under the production eye of Gianluca Buccellati, a previous collaborator with Arlo Parks or Lana Del Rey. The songs on it offer an escape from the daily rush, bringing in plenty of Californian sunshine and moodiness in which the listener can immerse themselves, experiencing a moment of respite. A good example of this is the single Nothing Works, which came about as an artist's response to attempts by record labels to pigeonhole him and intervene in his work. Declan cites St Vincent and Unknown Mortal Orchestra among his biggest musical inspirations when creating the new songs, while the lyrical content was heavily influenced by the therapy he went to in order to learn how to cope with the pressures placed on an actively touring and recording musician. Declan is now entering Level 2.0 as a singer-songwriter - he still doesn't shy away from difficult topics, but he is already aiming primarily at finding joy in life.
The 24-year-old already has albums What Do You Think About the Car? (2017) and Zeros (2020) to his credit, as well as performances at festivals such as Glastonbury, Coachella, Lollapalooza and Reading and Leads. His work has been compared to The Libertines or Jamie T, and the artist himself cites David Bowie as his biggest inspiration. He is often referred to as the voice of the younger generation, as he often touches on important social issues in his songs. He made his debut in 2015 with the single Brazil, criticising FIFA and the corruption present in it.
